The airport ceased operations in the early 1990s. An exact date is not documented, but its closure coincides with the period following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, when a vast number of small, local airfields across the former USSR were abandoned.
The closure was primarily due to economic reasons. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the centralized funding for the state-run Aeroflot, which operated these local routes, disappeared. Furthermore, the dismantling of the Soviet collective farm system (kolkhozes) eliminated the primary user of the airfield's services, which were agricultural aviation and local transport. The sharp economic decline and the lack of demand made the airfield economically unviable.
The site is completely defunct as an airport. Analysis of recent satellite imagery shows that the former dirt runway is no longer maintained. It is heavily overgrown with vegetation and appears to be used as pastureland or for other agricultural purposes. There are no visible signs of airport infrastructure, such as hangars, a terminal building, or navigation aids. The land has been fully reclaimed for agriculture.
Groznoye Airport was a typical Soviet-era local airfield ('аэродром местного значения'). Its primary function was to support the local agricultural economy in the Chuy Valley, one of Kyrgyzstan's main farming regions. Operations would have heavily featured agricultural aviation (crop dusting, fertilizing) using aircraft like the Antonov An-2. It also served as a link in the local air transportation network, providing short-haul passenger and cargo flights connecting the village and surrounding farms to regional centers. It was an integral part of the Soviet infrastructure designed to connect and support remote rural communities.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Groznoye Airport. The economic and logistical reasons for its original existence are no longer present. Modern transportation needs in the region are met by road networks and larger, centralized airports. The revival of such a small, remote airfield is not considered economically feasible or a priority for the government of Kyrgyzstan.
