Early 1990s
The airport's closure was a direct consequence of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. During the Soviet era, a vast network of small, local airfields was heavily subsidized by the central government and operated by Aeroflot's regional directorates. With the collapse of the USSR, this funding disappeared. The newly independent and economically struggling Kyrgyz Republic could not afford to maintain these small, often unprofitable, local air routes, leading to the closure of Madaniyat and many similar airfields across the country.
The airport is completely abandoned and non-operational. Analysis of satellite imagery shows the faint but clear outline of its single runway. The land has been repurposed for other uses. The former runway and apron areas are now used for agriculture, primarily as pasture for livestock. Several private homes and farm structures have been built directly on the former airfield grounds, and numerous dirt tracks now intersect the old runway. No original airport infrastructure, such as a terminal or hangars, appears to remain.
Madaniyat Airport was a typical Class E local airfield active during the Soviet period. Its primary role was to connect the rural population of Madaniyat and the surrounding agricultural areas with the regional hub, Osh, and other nearby towns. It was an essential part of the local infrastructure, handling light passenger and cargo transport, mail delivery, and medical evacuation flights. Operations were typically carried out by small, rugged utility aircraft like the Antonov An-2. The airport also likely supported agricultural aviation (aerial application of fertilizers and pesticides), which was vital for the collective farms in the fertile Fergana Valley region.
There are no known plans or realistic prospects for reopening Madaniyat Airport. The Kyrgyz government's aviation strategy focuses on modernizing its key international and regional airports, such as Manas (Bishkek) and Osh. The economic case for rebuilding and operating a small airfield at Madaniyat is non-existent, given the proximity to the much larger Osh Airport and the improved ground transportation in the region. Furthermore, the encroachment of private buildings and agricultural activity onto the former airfield land makes any potential revival prohibitively expensive and impractical.
