Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

The airport is believed to have ceased all operations in the early 1990s. While an exact date is not documented, its closure coincides with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the subsequent collapse of the state-funded regional air transport system.

Reason for Closure

The closure was primarily due to economic reasons. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the centralized funding for the vast Aeroflot network, which subsidized countless small local airfields, disappeared. Suzak Airport, like many others of its kind, became financially unviable. Furthermore, its proximity to the larger and better-equipped Jalal-Abad Airport (UAFJ), located only about 15-20 km to the southwest, made its operations redundant.

Current Status

The airport is completely abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals a single, decaying asphalt runway. The runway is no longer maintained, with visible cracks, vegetation growth, and dirt tracks crossing it. The land is being informally repurposed by the local population; the runway strip is used as a road and for the storage of what appears to be gravel or agricultural products. There are no intact terminal buildings, hangars, or any other aviation infrastructure remaining on the site.

Historical Significance

During the Soviet era, Suzak Airport served as a vital local airfield for the Suzak District in the Jalal-Abad Region. It was an integral part of Aeroflot's local service network, connecting the town and surrounding villages with regional hubs. Operations primarily consisted of short-haul passenger and cargo flights, typically utilizing rugged and versatile aircraft like the Antonov An-2. The airport also likely played a role in agricultural aviation (crop dusting) and served as a base for sanitary (medevac) and other emergency services, which were crucial for transportation in the mountainous terrain of Kyrgyzstan.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known or credible plans to reopen Suzak Airport. The significant cost required to completely reconstruct the runway and build new infrastructure, combined with the lack of economic demand and the full operational capacity of the nearby Jalal-Abad Airport, makes any prospect of reopening extremely unlikely. The airport is considered permanently closed.
