Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (IATA: FLL, ICAO: KFLL) is a major public airport in Broward County, Florida, serving as a primary gateway to the South Florida metropolitan area and a popular alternative to Miami International Airport. It functions as a significant hub for domestic and international travel, particularly for low-cost carriers and flights to the Caribbean and Latin America. Located approximately three miles southwest of downtown Fort Lauderdale and 21 miles north of Miami, the airport is conveniently positioned between the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Dania Beach. Access is straightforward via major highways, including I-95, I-595, and U.S. Route 1, making it easily reachable by car, taxi, and rideshare services.

The airport's history dates back to 1929 when it opened as Merle Fownes Airport. Its significance grew during World War II when it was commissioned as Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale. It was here that Flight 19, a group of five Navy torpedo bombers that disappeared in December 1945, was based, contributing to the legend of the Bermuda Triangle. After the war, it was transferred back to civilian control and has since expanded into one of the busiest airports in the United States. Annually, FLL handles over 35 million passengers, with major airlines including Spirit Airlines and JetBlue maintaining large operational bases.
