It is located approximately four miles (6 km) southeast of the central business district of Franklin in Sacramento County, California, at an elevation of 23 feet (7.0 meters) above mean sea level. The airport is mostly used for general aviation, including extensive student and helicopter training, as well as ultralight activity. Franklin Field is an unattended facility and does not have a control tower.
The airport features two asphalt runways:
- Runway 18/36 measures approximately 3,123 by 60 feet (952 x 18 meters).
- Runway 9/27 measures approximately 3,031 by 60 feet (924 x 18 meters).
All runways have a weight limit of 12,500 lbs GWT (Gross Weight). The Sacramento County Sheriff's Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC) is located on the east side of the airport, and overflights of this detention facility should be avoided except in emergencies.
Historically, Franklin Field was known as Franklin Air Force Auxiliary Field during World War II, serving as an auxiliary training airfield for bomber training at Mather Army Airfield and Stockton Army Airfield in California. It was acquired by Sacramento County in 1947.
