Type of Facility and Operations: The airport serves as a civil airport primarily supporting general aviation, air taxi, and military operations, and handles a wide variety of private, business, and charter aircraft and helicopters. Its operations include passenger and cargo transportation, emergency services, disaster response, and recreational activities. Facilities include public restrooms, various parking options, Customs and Border Protection services, FedEx shipping, and a pilot lounge. Notable Features or History: The airport's development began between 1934 and 1948 by the Works Progress Administration, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Navy. Initially known as Clallam County Municipal Landing Field, ownership was transferred to the Port of Port Angeles in 1951. It was renamed in September 1969 to honor William R. Fairchild, who established the Angeles Flying Service and served as the airport's first supervisor, following his death in an aircraft accident earlier that year. The primary runway features an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and is capable of accommodating aircraft up to an Airbus A319 or 115,000 pounds. In 2023, a significant rehabilitation project commenced on Runway 08/26 (now redesignated 09/27), involving repaving, lighting system upgrades, runway remarking, regrooving, and updates to instrument approach systems.
Current Status: William R. Fairchild International Airport is currently operational and open to the public. It does not have a control tower. As of 2018, the airport recorded 25,158 aircraft operations annually. Fuel services for 100LL and Jet-A are available. The Port of Port Angeles is constructing a new four-bay, 17,500 square foot box hangar in 2026.
