Historically, the airport opened as a private facility in 1937 (with operations beginning in 1930). During World War II, it was taken over by the United States Army Air Corps and operated as Clarksville Army Airfield, serving as a primary basic flying training airfield. It was officially named Outlaw Field in October 1943 in honor of Colonel John F. Outlaw, who was instrumental in its establishment. Current uses include flight training, aircraft rental, maintenance, and air ambulance services, and it hosts Austin Peay State University's helicopter flight program.
