Keesler Air Force Base (KBIX/BIX) is a United States Air Force installation located in Biloxi, Mississippi, on the Gulf Coast.
Type of Facility and Operations: Keesler Air Force Base is primarily a military training base, renowned as the "Electronics Training Center of Excellence" for the U.S. Air Force. Its main mission since 1941 has been high-technology training, particularly in electronics specialties. The base is home to the Headquarters, Second Air Force (2 AF), and the 81st Training Wing (81 TW), both operating under the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). Keesler trains over 28,000 students annually across approximately 400 courses in 37 different career fields, including cyber operations, air traffic control, weather, communications, and avionics. It also serves as a joint training installation, instructing personnel from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and other federal agencies. Additionally, Keesler hosts the Air Force Reserve Command's 403rd Wing, which includes the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, famously known as the "Hurricane Hunters," operating WC-130J aircraft for meteorological data collection. The base also operates Keesler Medical Center, one of the largest Air Force medical facilities and a teaching hospital, which notably runs the only medical genetics center in the U.S. Department of Defense.
Notable Features and History: Established in 1941 as Army Air Corps Station No. 8, Aviation Mechanics School, the base was dedicated as Keesler Army Airfield on August 25, 1941. It is named in honor of aviator 2nd Lt Samuel Reeves Keesler Jr., a Mississippi native killed in action during World War I. During World War II, Keesler was a significant technical and basic training center, notably training over 7,000 African American soldiers, including elements of the Tuskegee Airmen. The base has undergone various training mission evolutions, including periods of basic military and limited flight training. Keesler has been directly impacted by major hurricanes, including Camille in 1969 and Katrina in 2005. The base is also recognized as the setting for Neil Simon's play and film "Biloxi Blues."
Current Status: Keesler Air Force Base is currently operational and continues its role as a premier training installation. It remains under the control of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The base supports a community of approximately 5,100 active duty military personnel, 1,625 civil service employees, along with retirees, family members, and contractors.
