Block Island State Airport (KBID/BID) serves as the sole aerial gateway to Block Island, Rhode Island, providing an essential link for residents, visitors, and cargo to the mainland. As an alternative to ferry services, it offers year-round access and is particularly vital during the winter months or when sea conditions are rough. The airport plays a crucial role in the island's tourism economy and supports general aviation, emergency medical flights, and charter services.

Originally developed after World War II and officially opened to the public in 1950, the airport is owned and operated by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. Its history is tied to the growth of the island as a popular summer destination. The airport occupies a central position on the island, located approximately one mile from the main town of New Shoreham. Travelers arriving at the airport typically rely on pre-booked taxis or rental services, including cars, mopeds, and bicycles, to reach their accommodations, as public transportation options from the terminal are limited.

Operations at Block Island State Airport are exclusively domestic, consisting primarily of scheduled commuter flights and general aviation traffic. The dominant commercial carrier is New England Airlines, which operates frequent, short-duration flights—often lasting just 12 minutes—to and from Westerly State Airport (KWST) in mainland Rhode Island. These flights utilize small, propeller-driven aircraft suited for the airport's 2,502-foot runway. In 2022, the airport recorded just under 12,000 passenger enplanements, reflecting its status as a small but busy regional facility, especially during the peak summer season.

The airport's facilities are modest and functional, designed for efficiency rather than extensive amenities. The single-story terminal building houses a ticketing and check-in counter for New England Airlines, a small waiting area, and public restrooms. There are no restaurants, retail shops, or passenger lounges on-site. Notably, flights departing from Block Island do not undergo Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening, which simplifies the departure process. For travelers, it is advisable to confirm check-in time requirements directly with the airline. Due to the island's popularity, especially between May and September, booking ground transportation in advance is highly recommended to ensure a smooth transition from the airport to your final destination.
