Primarily economic reasons. The airport was a private airfield ('jōgai richakuriku-jō' or off-field landing site) operated by Hokkaido Aviation Co., Ltd. Its main functions, agricultural aviation (crop dusting) and sightseeing flights, saw a significant decline in demand, making operations financially unsustainable. This led the operator to cease all activities and officially abolish the airfield.
The former airport site has been completely repurposed and is no longer used for aviation. The land, including the area of the former runway and taxiways, has been converted into the Teshikaga Solar Power Plant (弟子屈太陽光発電所), a large-scale solar energy farm. The flat, cleared, and open nature of the defunct airfield made it an ideal location for this type of renewable energy project.
Opened in 1956, Teshikaga Airport was a key local aviation facility for over 50 years. It played a dual role in the region's economy. Firstly, it was a base for agricultural aircraft, providing essential crop-dusting services to local farms. Secondly, it was a popular hub for tourism, offering scenic sightseeing flights over the spectacular landscapes of the nearby Akan Mashu National Park, including iconic sights like Lake Mashū, Lake Kussharo, and Mount Iō. The airport also catered to general aviation pilots.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Teshikaga Airport. The permanent installation of the large-scale solar power plant on the site makes its return to an aviation facility virtually impossible. The region's commercial and general aviation needs are served by larger, established airports such as Memanbetsu Airport (MMB/RJCM) and Kushiro Airport (KUH/RJCK).
