The exact closure date is not publicly documented, as it was a private facility. Analysis of historical satellite imagery suggests the helipad was operational in the early 2000s but its markings became indistinct and the area repurposed by the early 2010s. The closure likely occurred sometime in the late 2000s or early 2010s.
No official reason has been published. However, the closure is almost certainly due to a combination of economic and operational factors. The heliport served a private industrial facility, and its functions, such as aerial inspection and surveillance, have largely been superseded by more cost-effective and safer technologies like unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). Decommissioning the heliport would eliminate significant operational, maintenance, and insurance costs for the parent company.
The site of the former heliport is now a large, paved, open area within the ENEOS Negishi Refinery. The circular helipad and its 'H' marking are no longer visible. Based on satellite imagery, the area appears to be used as a multi-purpose space for vehicle parking, staging of materials and equipment, or as a designated emergency assembly point for refinery personnel.
The heliport held no public historical significance. It was a private heliport located within the secure perimeter of the ENEOS Negishi Refinery (one of Japan's largest oil refineries, formerly run by Nippon Oil and JXTG). Its sole purpose was to support the refinery's operations. This likely included executive transport, aerial surveillance and inspection of the vast complex and associated pipelines, and serving as a staging point for emergency response drills or medical evacuations. It was an industrial tool, not a public transport facility.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Yokohama South Heliport. The operational need for helicopter services at the refinery has likely been permanently replaced by modern alternatives. Given that it is on private, high-security industrial land, there is no commercial or public case for its reactivation.
