November 30, 2003. The airport ceased operations upon the opening of its replacement, the new Goto Fukue Airport (IATA: FUJ, ICAO: RJFE), on December 1, 2003.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, larger, and more modern facility. The original airfield's runway was only 1,200 meters long, which restricted operations to smaller turboprop aircraft and could not be easily extended due to its coastal location. The new airport was constructed with a 2,000-meter runway to accommodate larger jet aircraft (like the Boeing 737), improve safety, handle increased passenger demand, and boost the region's tourism and economy.
The site of the former airport has been substantially repurposed. A large portion of the old runway and apron area is now home to the 'Goto Tomie Mega Solar Power Plant,' a large-scale solar energy facility. While the faint outline of the runway is still visible from satellite imagery, it is no longer intact or used for any aviation purposes.
Opened on October 1, 1963, this was the first airport to serve the Goto Islands. It was a critical piece of infrastructure that significantly reduced travel time to and from mainland Japan (primarily Fukuoka and Nagasaki), which was previously only possible via long ferry journeys. The airport was a vital lifeline for residents, business, and tourism, and was essential for emergency medical transport. Operations were mainly handled by All Nippon Airways (ANA) and its regional affiliates, using turboprop aircraft like the NAMC YS-11 and later the DHC-8.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airfield. It has been permanently and successfully replaced by the nearby Goto Fukue Airport (RJFE). The significant redevelopment of the site for solar power generation makes any future use as an airport virtually impossible.
