September 1945
The airfield was a military base for the Imperial Japanese Navy. It was decommissioned and ceased all operations following the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. The facility was never converted for civilian use.
The former airfield site has been completely redeveloped and is now a core part of the Otake-Iwakuni industrial complex. The specific location is occupied by the Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation's Otake Plant (三菱ケミカル株式会社 大竹事業所) and other large industrial facilities. There are no visible remnants of the original airfield infrastructure like runways, ramps, or hangars. A memorial monument (慰霊碑 - Ireihi) dedicated to the personnel of the Otake Naval Air Group is located nearby to commemorate its history.
Otake Airfield was the base for the Imperial Japanese Navy's Otake Naval Air Group (大竹海軍航空隊 - Otake Kaigun Kōkūtai), established on October 1, 1938. It was a primary training center specializing in seaplanes and flying boats. Throughout the Pacific War, it played a crucial role in training a large number of pilots, observers, and aircrew for the IJN Air Service. Its coastal location was ideal for seaplane operations. The base was a strategic military asset and was targeted by Allied air raids towards the end of the war.
None. The land has been entirely repurposed into a heavily developed and active petrochemical industrial zone for several decades, making any future conversion back to an airfield infeasible.
