Approximately 1954. Operations were gradually phased out in the early 1950s as they were transferred to the newly developed Okadama Airport.
The primary reason for closure was urban expansion. The airfield's central location became valuable for residential and commercial development in the rapidly growing post-war city of Sapporo. Its functions were officially replaced by the new Sapporo Okadama Airport (now JGSDF Camp Okadama and Sapporo Okadama Airport, RJCO).
The site of the former airfield is now a fully developed urban area. It is located in the Soen and Kita-Jūjō neighborhoods of Sapporo's Chūō-ku and Kita-ku wards. The land is occupied by residential housing, apartment buildings, commercial properties, schools, and roads. The adjacent Sapporo Racecourse is a major landmark that existed next to the airfield and remains today. There are no physical remnants of the runway or airport facilities.
Opened in 1926, Sapporo Airfield (also known as Kanjō-dōri Airfield) was the first major airport for the city of Sapporo and one of the earliest in Hokkaido. It was a key hub for early Japanese civil aviation, handling mail and passenger services operated by Japan Air Transport (a predecessor to Japan Airlines) connecting Sapporo to Tokyo. During World War II, it was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Army. After the war, it was briefly used by U.S. occupation forces before its functions were moved to the current Okadama Airport site. The ICAO code JP-2681 is a non-standard identifier used in some third-party databases for historical airfields, not an official ICAO designation.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening. The site is now a densely populated part of central Sapporo, making any aviation activity impossible. The city is comprehensively served by two modern airports: Sapporo Okadama Airport (RJCO) for regional flights and New Chitose Airport (RJCC) for major domestic and international routes.
