The gliderport was officially abolished due to a public works project. Located on the riverbed of the Omono River, the land was required by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) for a river improvement and flood control project. This is a common reason for the closure of riverbed airfields in Japan, as flood management and safety take precedence.
The site of the former gliderport has been completely repurposed and no longer exists as an airfield. The land has been integrated into the Omono River's flood plain as part of the completed river improvement project. It now functions as a flood control basin (遊水地, yūsuichi) and public green space. There are no remaining traces of the runway, hangars, or any aviation-related infrastructure.
Yotsugoya Gliderport was an unpaved, off-field landing site (known in Japan as a 場外離着陸場, jōgai richakuriku-jō) rather than a fully licensed airport. Its primary historical significance lies in its role as the home base for the Akita University Aviation Club (秋田大学航空部) from 1970 until its closure. For four decades, the site was used for glider training and recreational flights for university students, with takeoffs typically conducted using a winch system. It was a key local hub for general aviation and student sport.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Yotsugoya Gliderport. The land has been permanently repurposed for critical flood control infrastructure, making a return to aviation use infeasible. The Akita University Aviation Club, the former primary operator, has since relocated its activities to the Oogata Gliderport (大潟滑空場) in Ōgata village, Akita.
