Circa 1996-1997. The airfield was closed to allow for the construction of the Ina Ski Resort, which officially opened on the site in December 1997. All aviation activities ceased prior to the start of construction.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The owners of the land opted to repurpose the site for a more commercially profitable venture. The construction of the Ina Ski Resort represented a significant investment and a complete change in land use, making the continuation of airfield operations impossible.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and is now the Ina Ski Resort (伊那スキーリゾート). The long, flat area that once served as the runway has been transformed into beginner and intermediate ski slopes, complete with chairlifts, snowmaking equipment, and a resort base lodge. There are no remaining traces of the original airfield.
Ina Airfield, also known locally as Ina Glider Airfield (伊那グライダー飛行場), was a non-official airstrip, classified as a 'jōgai richakuriku-jō' (場外離着陸場), meaning an off-airport landing and takeoff site. Its primary function was to support recreational aviation. It was a key location for gliding clubs and ultralight aircraft pilots in the Nagano Prefecture, valued for the favorable thermal and ridge lift conditions in the Ina Valley. The airfield consisted of a single unpaved (grass or gravel) runway and minimal facilities. It held no military or scheduled commercial significance, but was an important local hub for the general aviation and gliding community.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Ina Airfield. The land has been permanently and extensively repurposed for the ski resort. Reverting the site to an airfield would require the complete removal of the resort infrastructure, which is economically and logistically unfeasible. The site's function as an airfield is considered a part of its past history with no future.
