Economic non-viability and lack of use. The airfield was an 'agricultural airfield' (農道離着陸場, nōdō richakuriku-jō) built with public funds to transport agricultural produce. However, the cost of air transport proved to be far more expensive than conventional refrigerated trucking, leading to the facility being severely underutilized. This was a common issue for many similar agricultural airfields built across Japan during the same period, which were often criticized as wasteful public works projects.
The site has been completely repurposed and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. The former runway and grounds are now occupied by the 'Mamurogawa Town Mega Solar Power Plant' (真室川町メガソーラー発電所), a large-scale solar energy farm that covers the footprint of the old airfield. All aviation-related infrastructure has been removed.
Mamurogawa Airfield was not a commercial, passenger, or military airport. It was constructed as part of Japan's national 'Agricultural Airfield Development Project' (農道離着陸場整備事業) to support the local agricultural industry. Its primary intended operations were the rapid air transport of high-value, perishable produce (like cherries or flowers) to urban markets, as well as supporting activities like crop dusting and aerial surveying. The facility consisted of a single paved runway approximately 800 meters long. Despite its intended purpose, it saw very little actual flight activity throughout its existence due to the unfavorable economics of air freight for agricultural goods.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently redeveloped for renewable energy generation, making any return to aviation use infeasible.
