Approximately 2009. The operating club, 'Sky Club Atagohara', is reported to have ceased its activities around this time, and by 2010 the site was confirmed to be no longer in use as an active airfield.
Economic and operational reasons. The airfield was a private facility operated by a local flying club. The closure was a direct result of the club ceasing its operations, which is a common reason for small, private airfields to shut down. There is no evidence of a major accident, government mandate, or military conversion leading to the closure.
The site of the former airfield has been completely repurposed. Satellite imagery and local reports confirm that a large-scale solar power plant (megasolar farm) now occupies the majority of the land, including the area of the former runway. The original aviation infrastructure, such as hangars and the grass strip, no longer exists in its operational form. The land has been permanently converted for renewable energy generation.
Atagohara Airfield was a private, unpaved (grass) airstrip that served the local general aviation community. Its primary function was to support recreational flying. The field was mainly used by members of the 'Sky Club Atagohara' for operating ultralight aircraft (ULP) and motor gliders. Its significance was not commercial or military but was vital to the local hobbyist pilots and aviation enthusiasts in the Gosen area of Niigata Prefecture.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Atagohara Airfield. The conversion of the land into a significant solar farm represents a long-term, high-investment change of use, making any return to aviation activities extremely unlikely and financially unfeasible.
