Approximately April 26, 2008. The heliport was closed and decommissioned concurrently with the opening of its replacement, the new and current Hahajima Heliport (ICAO: RJBH).
Replacement and obsolescence. The former heliport was a basic, temporary facility primarily established for emergency use. It was officially replaced by a modern, permanent, and better-equipped public heliport built by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government at a more suitable location (Koumoridani) on the island. The new facility offered improved safety and operational standards for the island's critical transport needs.
The site is decommissioned and abandoned. The former helipad, located on a hill south of the main village, is now overgrown with grass and other vegetation. The land is unused and there are no remaining operational facilities.
The Former Hahajima Heliport was a vital lifeline for the extremely remote community of Hahajima. Its sole and critical function was to handle emergency medical evacuations. Given that Hahajima is only accessible from the main island of Chichijima by a multi-hour ferry ride (and Chichijima itself is a 24-hour ferry ride from Tokyo), this heliport was essential for transporting patients with urgent medical needs. Operations were not scheduled but conducted on an on-demand basis, typically by helicopters from the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), Japan Coast Guard, or emergency services to transport patients to Chichijima or mainland Japan. It was not a commercial facility for passenger or cargo transport.
There are zero prospects for reopening this specific former heliport. Its function has been entirely and permanently superseded by the new, operational Hahajima Heliport (ICAO: RJBH). Any future discussions regarding air access to the Ogasawara Islands are focused on the long-debated potential for a fixed-wing airport on the larger island of Chichijima, not the revival of this obsolete facility.
