Mid-2010s, approximately 2014-2015. The airfield was confirmed to be active in the early 2010s but was reported as closed by the mid-2010s.
The airfield was a privately owned and operated facility. It is widely reported in the Japanese aviation community that the airfield closed following the death of its owner and creator. The closure was due to the inability to continue operations without its key individual, making it a personal and economic-based closure.
The site is abandoned. Satellite imagery and recent visitor reports confirm the former runway is unmaintained and heavily overgrown with weeds and shrubs. The hangars and associated buildings are still standing but are in a state of dereliction and disrepair. The land is not being actively used for any other purpose and remains a visible remnant of the former airfield.
Kamimurashima Airfield was a private 'jōgai-richakuriku-jō' (off-field landing and takeoff site) primarily used for ultralight and light sport aircraft. It was not a commercial or military airport. Its significance was local, serving as a popular and scenic destination for recreational pilots in Japan's Shikoku region. Built and maintained by its owner on private land, it was known for its beautiful coastal setting on a peninsula overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The unpaved grass/dirt runway was approximately 400-500 meters long and catered exclusively to the general aviation community.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Kamimurashima Airfield. As a private passion project, its existence was tied directly to its owner. Without a new private investor willing to purchase the land, invest significantly in restoring the runway and facilities, and navigate regulatory requirements, it is highly unlikely to be revived as an airfield.
