Approximately 2010-2011
The airfield was a private facility, legally designated as an 'off-field landing and takeoff site' (場外離着陸場 - jōgai richakuriku-jō). It reportedly ceased operations following the death of its private owner and manager. The closure was not due to economic failure, military conversion, or a major accident, but rather the end of its private stewardship.
The site of the former airfield is completely defunct and abandoned. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a long, narrow strip of land where the runway once was. The area is now heavily overgrown with grass and vegetation, and the runway is no longer distinct or usable. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure, such as hangars or service buildings. The land appears to be unused and is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding natural environment.
Saigawa Airfield was never a commercial or military airport. Its significance was rooted in general and recreational aviation. It served as a hub for the local ultralight aircraft (ULP) and hobbyist pilot community in the Fukuoka Prefecture. The airfield consisted of a simple grass or dirt runway alongside the Saigawa River and provided a crucial facility for grassroots aviation enthusiasts in the region. It did not handle any scheduled passenger, cargo, or military traffic.
There are no known plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening Saigawa Airfield. Given that it was a small, privately-owned strip for a niche recreational community and has been defunct for over a decade, a revival is considered extremely unlikely. There is no apparent commercial, public, or strategic interest in re-establishing an airfield at this location.
