August 1945
The airfield was destroyed by Allied bombing raids in the final months of World War II and was officially closed and dismantled following the surrender of Japan and the subsequent dissolution of the Imperial Japanese Army.
The site of the former Tachiarai North Airfield, along with the rest of the vast airfield complex, has been completely redeveloped. The land is now used for a mixture of industrial, agricultural, and commercial purposes. A prominent landmark built on the former airfield grounds is the Kirin Brewery Fukuoka Factory. Other areas are occupied by farms, factories, and local businesses. While the runways and military buildings are gone, the area's history is preserved at the nearby Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum (大刀洗平和記念館), which displays artifacts, photographs, and aircraft (including a restored Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter) to commemorate the airfield's history and those who served there.
Tachiarai North Airfield (大刀洗北飛行場, Tachiarai Kita Hikōjō) was a critical component of the larger Tachiarai Army Airfield complex, which was one of the most important aviation hubs for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service (IJAAS).
Established in 1919, the Tachiarai complex grew to become the largest airfield in East Asia. It served multiple functions:
- **Flight School:** It was home to the Tachiarai Army Flight School, a premier institution for training thousands of pilots, navigators, and mechanics.
- **Maintenance and Depot:** The base housed extensive aircraft manufacturing and repair facilities, including a branch of the Tachiarai Army Air Arsenal, making it a vital logistical center.
- **Operational Base:** Throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, it served as an operational base for various combat units. Aircraft such as the Nakajima Ki-27, Ki-43 'Oscar', and Kawasaki Ki-61 'Tony' operated from here.
- **Kamikaze Base:** In the late stages of the war, Tachiarai became a major staging point for *tokkōtai* (kamikaze) suicide attack missions targeting the Allied fleet, particularly during the Battle of Okinawa.
The entire complex, including the North Airfield, was heavily targeted by American B-29 bombers in March and May of 1945. These raids caused catastrophic damage, destroying most of the facilities and killing hundreds of military personnel and civilian workers, effectively neutralizing it as a military threat before the war's end. The ICAO code JP-2407 is a non-standard identifier, likely assigned by flight simulator communities or unofficial databases, as the airfield closed before the modern ICAO system was fully implemented.
None. The site has been fully and irreversibly redeveloped for civilian use over many decades. There are no plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening Tachiarai North Airfield or any part of the former military complex as an aviation facility.
