Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2009-2010. Flight operations were suspended immediately following a fatal accident on May 5, 2008. The airfield was officially and permanently closed after the city of Iga, the landowner, decided not to renew the lease with the operating company.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was a fatal accident involving an ultralight aircraft in May 2008, which killed the pilot. This incident led to an investigation and the suspension of all activities. Citing safety concerns and the operator's subsequent financial and operational issues, the city of Iga chose to terminate the land lease agreement, leading to the airfield's permanent shutdown.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely repurposed. Since approximately 2014, the land has been occupied by a large-scale solar power plant named 'Mega Solar Iga'. All remnants of the runway, taxiways, and aviation buildings have been removed to make way for rows of solar panels.

Historical Significance

Iga Airfield (also known as Iga Ueno Airfield) was a small, private airfield that began operations around 1990. It was not a public transport airport but served the general aviation community. Its main purpose was to provide a base for recreational flying, flight training, and aerial photography, primarily for ultralight aircraft (ULPs) and light sport aircraft. The airfield, operated by a private company named Aero Master Co., Ltd., consisted of a single unpaved/grass runway approximately 550 meters long and basic hangar facilities. It was a local hub for aviation enthusiasts in the Kansai region.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening Iga Airfield. The land has been permanently redeveloped into a major solar energy farm, making any future use for aviation impossible without the complete removal of the current infrastructure.
