August 1945
The airfield was closed following Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. As an Imperial Japanese Army Air Force facility, it was abandoned and dismantled during the subsequent Allied occupation and the dissolution of the Japanese military.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped. The land is now primarily occupied by the Kodama Industrial Park (ε ηε·₯ζ₯ε£ε°) and surrounding agricultural fields. No runway, hangars, or other airport infrastructure remain. However, the layout of some local roads and property lines still faintly reflects the former airfield's footprint. A stone monument has been erected by the city of Honjo near the site to commemorate its history and the pilots who trained there.
Kodama Airfield was an Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAS) facility active during the late stages of World War II (c. 1943-1945). It was officially the Kumagaya Army Flight School, Kodama Branch School (ηθ°·ιΈθ»ι£θ‘ε¦ζ ‘ε ηεζε ΄). Its primary mission was the advanced training of fighter pilots, including those for Special Attack Units (Kamikaze). Pilots trained here on aircraft such as the Nakajima Ki-43 "Hayabusa" and the Nakajima Ki-84 "Hayate". The airfield was part of a critical network of airbases in the Kanto Plain established for homeland defense and pilot training as the war intensified.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Kodama Airfield. The site has been fully and permanently repurposed for industrial and agricultural use for over 75 years.
