Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

August 1945

Reason for Closure

Military Defeat and Conversion

Current Status

The airfield ceased all aviation operations following Japan's surrender at the end of World War II in August 1945. The site was subsequently repurposed. Today, the former airfield grounds are almost entirely occupied by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Camp Hisai (陸上自衛隊久居駐屯地). The original runways, taxiways, and hangars have been demolished. The land is now used for military barracks, administrative buildings, vehicle depots, and a large parade ground. The surrounding area has been developed with residential and commercial properties.

Historical Significance

Hisai Airfield, more formally known as Ise Airfield (伊勢飛行場), was a military air base for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service (IJAAS) during World War II. Constructed around 1940-1941, its primary role was as a major pilot training center, hosting the Kumagaya Army Flight School's Hisai Education Unit (熊谷陸軍飛行学校久居教育隊). It trained pilots for fighter and reconnaissance aircraft. As the war progressed and Allied bombing raids intensified, the airfield's role expanded to include air defense operations for the strategically important Ise Bay and the Nagoya industrial region. The airfield was a target of American air raids in the final year of the war. The ICAO code 'JP-2212' is not an official ICAO designation but is likely a user-assigned code from flight simulator scenery databases or unofficial airport catalogs to mark the historical location.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Hisai Airfield. The site is an active and important military installation (JGSDF Camp Hisai), and its conversion back to an aviation facility is not feasible or considered. The region is well-served by major airports such as Chubu Centrair International Airport (RJGG) and Nagoya Airfield (RJNA).
