Approximately late 2013. The last recorded flights by its primary user, the Iwate University Glider Club, took place in November 2013. The airfield was officially delisted as an approved 'off-airport landing site' by Japanese authorities between 2013 and early 2015.
The closure was a result of the cessation of operations by its sole and primary user, the Iwate University Glider Club (岩手大学学友会航空部). The club relocated its activities to the larger and better-equipped Hanamaki Airport (ICAO: RJSI). This move was likely driven by the desire for improved facilities, a paved runway, and a more robust operational environment. Without a tenant, the gliderfield was no longer financially or operationally viable.
The site is abandoned and unmaintained. Satellite imagery and reports from visitors confirm that the grass runway is heavily overgrown and no longer usable. The main building, which served as a clubhouse and hangar, has fallen into a state of significant disrepair and is dilapidated. The land has not been redeveloped for other purposes and remains a recognizable, albeit derelict, former airfield.
Oshuku Gliderfield was a dedicated 'jōgai richakuriku-jō' (場外離着陸場), an officially recognized off-airport landing and takeoff site, primarily for glider activities. For several decades, it served as the home base for the Iwate University Glider Club. The field was crucial for training generations of student pilots in the Iwate region, teaching them the fundamentals of flight through winch-launched glider operations. It was a significant local hub for recreational and educational aviation.
There are no known plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening Oshuku Gliderfield. With the former primary user firmly established at Hanamaki Airport and the significant degradation of the site's infrastructure, a return to aviation activities is highly improbable.
