Military Defeat and Reorganization. The airfield was part of a larger complex operated by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service. With the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II, all Imperial military facilities were disarmed and ceased operations. The land and facilities were subsequently taken over by Allied Occupation forces and later transferred to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), which redeveloped the area for its own purposes, consolidating the former airfields into the modern Camp Narashino.
The site of the former Narashino West Airfield is now completely integrated into the JGSDF Camp Narashino (陸上自衛隊習志野駐屯地). The coordinates point to the central training grounds and parade square of the camp, which is home to the elite 1st Airborne Brigade. There are no visible remnants of the original runway at this location. The active aviation facility for the base is the adjacent Narashino Heliport (ICAO: RJAN), which serves the helicopters of the 1st Airborne Brigade.
The Narashino area was a cradle of Japanese military aviation. The site was historically part of a major Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) base that housed some of the earliest aviation units. It was home to the Army Airship School (陸軍気球連隊, Rikugun Kikyū Rentai) and later a branch of the Kumagaya Army Aviation School (熊谷陸軍飛行学校, Kumagaya Rikugun Hikō Gakkō). The airfield served as a critical training center for IJA pilots, observers, and aircrews from the 1920s through World War II, playing a significant role in the development and expansion of Japan's military air power.
None. The land has been fully redeveloped and is an integral part of a critical, active military installation (JGSDF Camp Narashino). There are no plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening it as an airfield, as its original function and infrastructure have been gone for decades and the land is used for ground force training and garrison purposes.
