Approximately August 1945
Military Decommissioning. The airfield was an Imperial Japanese Army facility that was closed following Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. It was never converted to civilian use and the land was eventually repurposed.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the Kanegasaki Industrial Park (金ケ崎工業団地). The most prominent facility occupying the former airfield grounds is the Toyota Motor East Japan Iwate Plant, a major automobile manufacturing factory. The layout of some roads within the industrial park is believed to follow the alignment of the original runways and taxiways.
The facility was more commonly known as Kanegasaki Airfield (金ケ崎飛行場). It was constructed by the Imperial Japanese Army starting in 1943. Its primary purpose was to serve as a training facility (a branch of the Kumagaya Army Flight School) for army pilots during the final years of World War II. It was intended to train pilots for aircraft like the Tachikawa Ki-9 and Tachikawa Ki-54, and was also designated as a base for special attack (kamikaze) units in preparation for the anticipated Allied invasion of the Japanese mainland. The war concluded before the airfield was used in significant combat operations.
None. The land has been permanently and extensively repurposed for heavy industrial use. There are no known plans or prospects for converting the site back into an airfield.
