Approximately late 2015. The airfield ceased operations to allow for redevelopment. Construction of a solar power plant on the site officially began in January 2016, confirming the airfield was permanently closed by that time.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The site was sold and repurposed for a large-scale renewable energy project. The land was deemed more valuable for solar power generation than for its use as a private airfield, leading to its closure and conversion.
The site has been completely transformed into the Kumagaya Kōnan Solar Power Plant (熊谷江南太陽光発電所). It is a 15.6-megawatt utility-scale solar farm developed by Kyocera TCL Solar LLC, which began operations in December 2017. The distinct long, narrow shape of the former runway is still clearly visible from satellite imagery, but the entire surface is now covered with thousands of solar panels.
Kumagaya South Airfield, known locally as Kōnan Airfield (江南飛行場), was a private airstrip primarily serving the general aviation and recreational flying community. It featured a single paved runway and was used by light aircraft and ultralights. It should not be confused with the larger, historic Imperial Japanese Army Kumagaya Airfield, which is now the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) Kumagaya Air Base (RJTK). The significance of JP-2143 was local, providing a base for private pilots and flying enthusiasts in the northern Saitama Prefecture.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been fully and permanently redeveloped for long-term industrial energy production. The aviation infrastructure has been completely removed and replaced by the solar farm, making any return to aviation use infeasible.
