Mid-2000s, approximately between 2005 and 2007. Historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still visible in 2005 but was completely gone by 2008 when major construction on the site was underway.
Urban redevelopment. The airfield was closed to make way for the large-scale development of the Kenkyū-gakuen (研究学園) district. This development was driven by the 2005 opening of the Tsukuba Express (TX) rail line, which connected Tsukuba directly to Tokyo and massively increased the land's value and demand for commercial and residential use.
The site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. The former location of the runway and airfield facilities is now the heart of a major urban center. Key landmarks on the site include the 'iias Tsukuba' shopping mall, the Kenkyū-gakuen Ekimae Park, numerous high-rise condominiums, residential housing developments, and a network of city roads. There are no visible remnants of the former airfield.
Osone Airfield, also known as Tsukuba Airfield or Osone Gliderport, was a private, non-public general aviation facility. In Japan, it was classified as a 'jōgai richakuriku-jō' (場外離着陸場), or an 'off-airport landing and takeoff site'. It was a vital hub for the local recreational flying community, primarily used for ultralight aircraft, gliders, motor gliders, and light sport aircraft. It was not a military base or a commercial airport but played a significant role for aviation enthusiasts and private pilot training in the northern Kanto region.
Zero. The land has been fully repurposed into a high-value, high-density urban area. The existing commercial, residential, and public infrastructure makes it physically and economically impossible to revert the site to an airfield. There are no plans or prospects for its reopening.
