Circa 2008
The airfield ceased operations following the death of its private owner and operator. Lacking a successor to manage the facility, it was permanently closed.
The site is no longer an airfield and is unrecognizable as such from the ground. The land has been completely redeveloped and is now occupied by a large-scale solar power plant, often referred to as a 'megasolar' farm. While the faint outline of the former runway can still be discerned in some satellite images, the area is now covered with rows of solar panels.
Skyport Fuji was a privately-owned recreational airfield, classified in Japan as a 'jōgai richakuriku-jō' (off-airport landing site). It was a popular hub for general aviation enthusiasts, primarily serving ultralight aircraft and motor gliders. Its most significant feature was its spectacular location in the Oshino basin, directly at the foot of Mount Fuji, which provided pilots with breathtaking views and unique scenic flight opportunities. It was well-known and cherished within Japan's recreational flying community for its friendly atmosphere and stunning scenery.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Skyport Fuji. The conversion of the land into a major solar energy installation represents a definitive and long-term change in land use, making any return to aviation activities extremely unlikely.
