The airport was closed and relocated due to significant operational limitations. Its coastal location resulted in frequent flight disruptions from strong crosswinds, and its short 1,625-meter runway could not accommodate larger jet aircraft or support future growth. It was replaced by the new, larger Akita Airport (AXT/RJSK), which was built inland with a longer runway and modern facilities.
The former airport site has been completely redeveloped into the Akita Prefectural Central Park (Akita Kenritsu Chūō Kōen). This large public space houses numerous major sports and recreational facilities, including the Akita Prefectural Baseball Stadium (Komachi Stadium), an athletics stadium, and tennis courts. The layout of some roads within the park still faintly echoes the alignment of the original runway.
Opened on October 1, 1961, this was the first full-scale airport serving Akita Prefecture and was a vital hub for its economic development and connectivity during Japan's high-growth era. It primarily handled domestic flights operated by All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Toa Domestic Airlines (TDA), connecting Akita with major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo. The airport initially served propeller aircraft like the NAMC YS-11 and later accommodated small jets such as the Boeing 737. Its original ICAO code was RJSK, which was transferred to the new airport upon its opening.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening. The airport's functions were permanently transferred to the current Akita Airport, and the original site has been fully repurposed for public and recreational use.
