Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 1969. The airstrip ceased operations when the site was returned to the Japanese government by the U.S. military.

Reason for Closure

Military Decommissioning and Land Return. The site was a temporary airstrip used by U.S. Occupation Forces. It was closed upon the return of the land to Japanese control for conversion into a public park.

Current Status

The site is now the Negishi Forest Park (根岸森林公園), a large and popular public park in Yokohama. The former infield of the racecourse, where the landing strip was located, is now open green space, lawns, and walking paths. The original 1890s grandstand of the Negishi Racecourse is preserved on the site as a historical ruin, and the Equine Museum of Japan is also located on the grounds.

Historical Significance

The 'airfield' was not a formal, purpose-built airport but rather a landing strip established by U.S. Occupation Forces inside the historic Negishi Racecourse after World War II. The entire area, including the racecourse and surrounding land, was requisitioned and became the 'Negishi Heights' U.S. military housing complex. The flat infield of the race track was used as a simple airstrip for light observation and liaison aircraft (like the L-5 Sentinel) and helicopters. The ICAO code 'JP-2008' is an unofficial identifier, likely originating from flight simulator scenery databases, as the strip never held an official ICAO designation. The name 'Makado' is believed to be a corruption or G.I. nickname for 'Mikado' (Emperor).

Reopening Prospects

None. The site is a major, protected public park and historical landmark situated within a densely populated urban area. There are no plans, discussions, or possibilities for it to be converted back into an airfield.
