Approximately 2013-2014. The airfield ceased operations to make way for the construction of a solar power plant, which began development around 2014 and was completed in 2016.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The site was sold by its private owner and repurposed for a more profitable venture: large-scale renewable energy generation. Maintaining a small, private airstrip was less economically viable than developing a solar farm on the land.
The site has been completely transformed into the 'Iwakuni Fujikawa Megasolar Power Plant'. The entire length of the former runway and surrounding grounds are now covered by thousands of photovoltaic solar panels, making it a significant renewable energy facility for the region.
Fujikawa Airfield, officially known as Fujikawa Off-Airport Landing Site (藤河場外離着陸場), was a privately-owned general aviation airstrip. It featured a single paved runway and was used by light aircraft, such as Cessnas, for recreational flying and private transport. It held no public, commercial, or military role, serving only a small community of local pilots. The identifier JP-1974 is not an official ICAO code but was used by some unofficial aviation databases to track smaller airfields.
Zero. The permanent and extensive infrastructure of the solar power plant built on the former airfield makes any prospect of reopening it for aviation purposes infeasible. The land has been irrevocably converted to industrial energy production for the foreseeable future.
