Approximately 1917-1918
The primary reason for closure was severe damage sustained from a major typhoon in 1917. This natural disaster, combined with the airfield's inherently poor ground conditions (it was built on soft, often muddy reclaimed land), made continued operations impractical and led to its abandonment.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and is now a dense urban area within Inage-ku, Chiba City. The land is occupied by residential neighborhoods, commercial buildings, and a portion of the Chiba University of Commerce campus. The area's significant history is preserved through several local monuments, including a stone marker designating it the 'Birthplace of Private Aviation' (民間航空発祥之地) and the nearby Inage Civil Aviation Commemorative Hall (稲毛民間航空記念館).
Inage Airfield holds a pivotal place in Japanese aviation history as it was the country's first private civilian airfield. Established in May 1912 by the Imperial Flying Association (帝国飛行協会), it was the cradle of non-military aviation in Japan. The airfield served as a crucial center for early flight training for civilian pilots, experimental aircraft testing, and public flight demonstrations which helped popularize aviation among the Japanese public. Many of Japan's pioneering aviators, such as Isobe Onokichi, trained and flew from this site. Its establishment marked the beginning of private aviation in the nation.
None. The airfield has been closed for over a century, and the land has been fully and densely redeveloped. There are no plans or prospects for its reopening as an aviation facility.
