Circa 2014-2015. Historical satellite imagery shows the runway was intact in 2013, but by 2016 the area was under heavy construction, indicating closure occurred within that timeframe.
The gliderfield was closed to accommodate a major civil engineering project on the Oita River. This project involved the replacement of the old Hirose Bridge (広瀬橋) with a new, wider bridge and the implementation of extensive flood control measures, including the redevelopment of the riverbanks and floodplain where the runway was located. The construction physically eliminated the space used for the airfield.
The site of the former gliderfield has been completely redeveloped and no longer exists as an airfield. The area is now part of a public park and the Oita River's improved flood control system. Current satellite imagery shows the land is occupied by baseball diamonds, green recreational spaces, and walking paths. The new Hirose Bridge now crosses over the general vicinity.
Hirosebashi Gliderfield was a small, local gliderport (滑空場 - kakkuujou) situated on the grassy riverbed of the Oita River. Its primary purpose was to support recreational gliding activities. It was the home base for the Oita Glider Club (大分グライダークラブ). Like many gliderfields in Japan, its location on a riverbed provided a long, flat, and unobstructed area suitable for glider takeoffs (likely via winch launch) and landings. Its significance was entirely local, serving as a key facility for the sport aviation community in the Oita region.
None. The site has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped for critical public infrastructure and recreation. The physical land required for a runway has been eliminated and repurposed, making a reopening of the gliderfield at this location impossible.
