Economic reasons. The airport was a privately-owned, non-public airfield operated by a company called Makurazaki Kankō Kaihatsu Co., Ltd. The company was dissolved due to a combination of factors, including the aging of its manager, the lack of a successor, and the general unprofitability of the operation. The business was no longer sustainable, leading to the decision to cease operations and close the airfield.
The airport is permanently closed and the site has been completely repurposed. Shortly after its closure, the land was sold and redeveloped into a large-scale solar power generation facility. The site now hosts the 'Makurazaki Kashiwa Solar Power Plant'. The runway, taxiways, and any remaining airport buildings have been demolished and replaced by extensive arrays of solar panels.
Opened on November 1, 1991, Makurazaki Airport was a small general aviation airfield established to promote local tourism and economic activity. It was not a commercial airport with scheduled passenger services. Its operations were primarily focused on sightseeing flights offering views of the Satsuma Peninsula, flight training for light aircraft, and recreational flying for ultralight aircraft. It featured a single paved runway measuring 500 meters by 25 meters. The ICAO code JP-1822 is an unofficial identifier from databases like OurAirports, as the facility was officially classified as a 'jōgai richakuriku-jō' (off-field landing and takeoff site) and did not have an official ICAO designation.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Makurazaki Airport. The complete redevelopment of the site into a major solar power plant makes a return to aviation use infeasible, as all essential infrastructure has been permanently removed.
