Approximately June 1966. The airfield ceased operations upon the opening of the new, larger Izumo Airport (ICAO: RJOC).
The airfield was closed because it was replaced by the modern Izumo Airport. Taisha Airfield had a short, unpaved runway and limited facilities, making it suitable only for small STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft. The new Izumo Airport was built with a longer, paved runway and superior infrastructure to handle larger, more modern aircraft like the NAMC YS-11, rendering Taisha Airfield obsolete for scheduled commercial services.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and no traces of the runway or airport facilities remain. The land is now occupied by the Shimane Prefectural Hamayama Park (島根県立浜山公園), a large public park that includes an athletics stadium, baseball fields, and other recreational sports facilities. The surrounding area is a residential neighborhood.
Opened on October 1, 1961, Taisha Airfield was a pioneering airport built specifically to serve tourists and pilgrims visiting the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines. It represented an early post-war effort to link a major cultural and religious site directly with air travel. The primary airline was Nitto Airlines (日東航空), a precursor to Japan Air System (JAS), which operated small aircraft such as the de Havilland Heron and de Havilland Dove. It provided crucial air links from Taisha to destinations like Osaka (Yao Airport) and the Oki Islands before a more permanent regional airport was established.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been fully and permanently repurposed for high-value public recreational and residential use. The region's aviation needs are comprehensively served by the nearby Izumo Airport (RJOC) and Miho-Yonago Airport (RJOH).
