Late 1945
The seaplane base was an Imperial Japanese Navy facility. It was closed and dismantled following Japan's surrender at the end of World War II and the subsequent dissolution of the Japanese military.
The former site of the seaplane base's land facilities has been completely redeveloped. The area along the southern shore of Lake Shinji is now a vibrant part of Matsue city, featuring the Shimane Prefectural Art Museum, public parks (Shinjiko Ohashi Riverside Park), waterfront promenades, and commercial and residential buildings. There are no visible remnants of the original military infrastructure, such as hangars or ramps. However, a stone monument commemorating the Matsue Naval Air Group (松江海軍航空隊之碑) stands in the area, acknowledging its historical significance.
The site was the location of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Matsue Air Group (松江海軍航空隊), established on October 1, 1940. Its primary mission was to serve as a major training center for reconnaissance seaplane pilots. The base used the vast, calm surface of the adjacent Lake Shinji (宍道湖) for its operations. Aircraft commonly operated from the base included trainer seaplanes like the Yokosuka K5Y 'Willow' and reconnaissance aircraft such as the Mitsubishi F1M 'Pete'. The base was active throughout the Pacific War and was targeted by Allied air raids in July 1945 before its closure later that year.
None. There are no known plans or prospects to reopen a seaplane base at this location. The area is now a densely populated and developed urban waterfront, making any revival of aviation activities impractical. The region's modern air transportation needs are served by conventional airports, primarily Izumo Airport (IZO) and Miho-Yonago Airport (YGJ).
