The airstrip ceased military operations in August 1945 with the end of World War II. It was never developed for civilian use and was officially abandoned for aviation purposes in the late 1940s as the land was repurposed.
The primary reason for closure was the end of World War II, which terminated its function as an Imperial Japanese Army airbase. Post-war assessments determined the site was unsuitable for conversion to a modern civilian airport due to its relatively short runways, surrounding hilly terrain, and proximity to Lake Shinji. The nearby and superior Miho Air Base (which became the current Yonago Kitaro Airport) was selected as the region's primary airport instead.
The former airstrip site has been completely redeveloped and shows no visible traces of its aviation past. The land is now occupied by a mix of public facilities, residential housing, and commercial buildings. Notable structures on the former airfield grounds include the Shimane Prefectural Police Driving License Center (島根県警察運転免許センター) and the Matsue City Tamayu Branch Office (松江市玉湯支所).
Historically known as Matsue Airfield (松江飛行場) or the first-generation Yonago Airfield, it was constructed by the Imperial Japanese Army between 1943 and 1944. Its primary purpose during World War II was to serve as a training base for pilots and for the air defense of the San'in region. It housed the Kumagaya Army Flying School's Matsue Education Unit (熊谷陸軍飛行学校松江教育隊). The airfield featured a main runway of approximately 1200 meters and was a key military installation in the area until the end of the war.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airstrip. The site is now a fully developed urban and suburban area, making any future aviation use physically impossible. The region is well-served by two active airports: Izumo Enmusubi Airport (RJOC) and Yonago Kitaro Airport (RJOH).
