Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa August 1945

Reason for Closure

The airfield, under its original name and operator, ceased to exist following the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. The Imperial Japanese Army was dissolved, and the facility was taken over by Allied (primarily US) occupation forces. It did not permanently close but was repurposed and renamed.

Current Status

The site of the former Taishō Airfield is now the active and operational Yao Airport (ICAO: RJOY). It is a major base for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Middle Army Aviation Group, housing numerous helicopters and military aviation units. Additionally, it is one of the most important general aviation airports in the Kansai region, serving flight schools, private aircraft, helicopter charter services, and news agency helicopters.

Historical Significance

The facility known as 'Taisho Auxiliary Airfield' was historically the Imperial Japanese Army's Taishō Airfield (大正飛行場, Taishō Hikōjō). Established in 1938, it was a major airbase for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service during World War II. It served as a key training center and an operational base for various air regiments (Sentai) involved in the defense of the Japanese home islands. After the war, it was occupied by the United States Army before being returned to the Japanese government in the 1950s. It was then re-established as a joint-use military and civilian airport.

Reopening Prospects

Not applicable. The airfield never permanently ceased operations. It evolved from the Imperial Japanese Army's Taishō Airfield into the current Yao Airport (RJOY) and remains fully active today.
