The facility, which was a public heliport rather than a fixed-wing airfield, was closed due to redundancy. Its functions were superseded by the opening of a new, more advanced heliport on the rooftop of the Muroran City General Hospital in February 2016. The new hospital-based heliport allowed for more efficient emergency medical transport (Doctor-Heli) by providing direct access to the medical center. The aging of the Hatchodaira facility and the associated maintenance costs were also contributing factors to its closure.
The site has been completely redeveloped. Shortly after the heliport was decommissioned, the land was repurposed for renewable energy generation. It is now the location of the 'Muroran Hatchodaira Megasolar Power Plant', a solar farm with numerous photovoltaic panels covering the former grounds.
Opened on August 1, 1988, the Muroran Hatchodaira Airfield was a public heliport (室蘭市八丁平公共用ヘリポート) owned and operated by the city of Muroran. It served as a vital base for public and emergency services for nearly three decades. Its primary operations included:
- Emergency Medical Services: Acting as a key landing zone for 'Doctor-Heli' medical evacuation helicopters.
- Disaster Relief: Serving as a staging point for rescue and supply operations during emergencies.
- Public Safety: Used by police and fire departments for aerial surveillance and response.
- Other Operations: Utilized for news gathering by media helicopters and other official public uses.
The facility consisted of a 25m x 25m concrete helipad and a small administration/storage building.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The heliport's functions were permanently transferred to the superior facility at the Muroran City General Hospital, and the land has been fundamentally repurposed for long-term use as a solar power plant.
