Circa 2013-2014. While the exact date is not officially documented in public records, aviation enthusiast reports and satellite imagery analysis indicate it ceased operations around this period. By 2015, the site was already being redeveloped.
Economic reasons. Shiranuka Flight Park was a privately owned and operated facility. The closure was due to the cessation of business by the operating company, not due to a specific accident, government mandate, or military conversion. It was a private venture that was no longer financially viable.
The site has been completely repurposed and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. The land formerly occupied by the runway and associated facilities has been developed into a large-scale solar power plant, known as the Shiranuka Solar Power Plant (白糠太陽光発電所). The entire area is now covered with rows of solar panels.
The airport, established in July 1990, was a small, private recreational airfield known as an 'air park' or 'flight park'. It was not a commercial airport and handled no scheduled passenger or cargo traffic. Its primary function was to serve the general aviation community, specifically for ultralight aircraft (ULP) and motor gliders. The facility consisted of a single grass runway, approximately 500 meters long, and basic support structures for private pilots and their aircraft.
None. The prospect of reopening the site as an airport is virtually zero. The complete redevelopment of the land into a solar farm means that all aviation-related infrastructure has been permanently removed. Re-establishing an airport would require the costly demolition of the existing power plant and a complete reconstruction of the airfield, making it highly improbable.
