Kisarazu 2nd Airfield

The site is an active and strategic military installation known as JGSDF Camp Kisarazu / Kisarazu Airfield (ICAO: RJTK). It is the headquarters of the JGSDF's 1st Helicopter Brigade and hosts a large fleet of transport helicopters, including the CH-47J/JA Chinook. Since 2020, it has also served as the provisional deployment and primary maintenance hub for the JGSDF's fleet of V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.

The site has significant military history. It was established in 1936 as the Kisarazu Air Base for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, home to land-based bomber units like the Mitsubishi G3M and G4M 'Betty'. After World War II, it was controlled by the U.S. Air Force as Kisarazu Air Base. In 1956, it was returned to Japan and used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). Since 1968, it has been JGSDF Camp Kisarazu, a major helicopter base for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).
