The airfield was not closed on a single specific date but was phased out following its conversion to a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) base in 1955. Fixed-wing aviation operations gradually ceased, and the runway was progressively built over throughout the latter half of the 20th century, rendering it unusable as an airfield.
Military conversion and repurposing. After the dissolution of the Imperial Japanese Army following World War II and the departure of post-war occupation forces, the site was transferred to the JGSDF in 1955 to be developed as a ground forces garrison (Camp Yamaguchi). The needs of the ground base superseded its function as an airfield, leading to its infrastructure being systematically built over.
The site is currently the active Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Camp Yamaguchi (陸上自衛隊山口駐屯地). The original runway and taxiways are no longer extant; the land is now covered with barracks, administrative buildings, training facilities, vehicle depots, and roads. The layout of the camp's main road still follows the path of the former runway, but it is no longer a functional aviation facility, though it may maintain a helipad for helicopter operations.
Originally established in 1941 as Ogōri Airfield (小郡飛行場) by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service. It served as a major training base for fighter pilots, notably for units flying the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien ("Tony") fighter. Towards the end of World War II, it was also used as a base for kamikaze special attack units. After Japan's surrender, it was occupied by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and renamed RAAF Station Bofu, hosting No. 81 Wing flying P-51 Mustang fighters as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. In 1955, it was handed over to Japan to become JGSDF Camp Yamaguchi.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the site as an airfield. It is fully occupied by a major, active military installation, and the region's civil and military aviation needs are comprehensively served by the nearby Yamaguchi Ube Airport (ICAO: RJDC, IATA: UBJ).
