Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2014-2015. The airfield was confirmed to be undergoing conversion in early 2015, and the solar power plant built on the site began commercial operations on October 1, 2015. This indicates the airfield ceased all operations in the period immediately preceding the construction.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The demand for agricultural aviation, its primary purpose, had declined. The land was subsequently sold and repurposed for a more profitable use as a large-scale solar power generation facility.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the location of the 'Tsuneishi Kamitsuge West Solar Power Plant' (常石神田西太陽光発電所). The entire area of the former runway, taxiways, and aprons is covered by thousands of solar panels. The original aviation infrastructure has been entirely removed.

Historical Significance

Kabe Airfield was a privately operated civilian airfield, not a public airport. It was legally classified in Japan as a 'jōgai ri-chakuriku-jō' (場外離着陸場), meaning an 'off-field landing and takeoff site'. Its main function was to serve as a base for the Hiroshima Prefecture Agricultural Aviation Business Association, which conducted crop dusting and other aerial agricultural services. The airfield was also popular with general aviation and ultralight aircraft enthusiasts in the region. It featured a single paved runway approximately 550 meters in length.

Reopening Prospects

None. The site has been permanently and completely converted for industrial-scale power generation. There are no known plans or realistic prospects for the solar farm to be dismantled and the site to be restored as an airfield.
