Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2012-2013

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The city of Daisen, which owned the land, leased the site for the construction of the Daisen City Kitanaraoka Solar Power Plant. This decision was driven by the opportunity to generate stable revenue for the city by repurposing the underutilized airfield for renewable energy production.

Current Status

The site has been completely converted into a large-scale solar farm. It is now the 'Daisen City Kitanaraoka Solar Power Plant' (大仙市北楢岡太陽光発電所). The former runway and surrounding grounds are covered by thousands of photovoltaic panels. The power plant, which began operations in December 2014, is operated by a private energy company on land leased from the city of Daisen.

Historical Significance

Kitanaraoka Airfield was not a commercial airport but an 'off-field landing site' (場外離着陸場 - Jōgai Richakuriku-jō) primarily serving the general aviation community. Its main purpose was recreational flying. The airfield was a key hub for local aviation enthusiasts, particularly the Akita Ultralight Plane Club, and was used for ultralight aircraft and glider operations. Its significance was purely local, providing a dedicated space for recreational pilots in Akita Prefecture.

Reopening Prospects

None. The site has been permanently and comprehensively redeveloped into a solar power generation facility. The infrastructure for the solar farm, including the panel arrays and support structures, occupies the entirety of the former airfield, making any future reopening for aviation purposes infeasible.
