Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

August/September 1945

Reason for Closure

The airfield was closed following the end of World War II and the subsequent dissolution of the Imperial Japanese military. As a military air base, its function ceased with Japan's surrender.

Current Status

The former airfield's layout, particularly the main runway, is still clearly visible from satellite imagery. The site has been extensively repurposed. A significant portion of the concrete runway is now used as a very long, straight public city road in Saijo. The surrounding land has been converted into agricultural fields (primarily rice paddies) and industrial zones. A major occupant of the site is the Saijo Plant of Iseki & Co., Ltd., a prominent agricultural machinery manufacturer, which uses parts of the former grounds and runway as a test course for its vehicles.

Historical Significance

The site was not 'Nagano Airstrip'. This name, along with the ICAO code JP-1289, is an unofficial designation likely originating from flight simulator databases. The historical name for this facility was the Imperial Japanese Navy's Nyugawa Airfield (壬生川飛行場, Nyūgawa Hikōjō).

Constructed around 1943-1944 during the late stages of World War II, it served as a crucial training base. The Nyugawa Naval Air Group (壬生川海軍航空隊, Nyūgawa Kaigun Kōkūtai) was established here in December 1944 to train pilots for fighter aircraft, contributing to Japan's final defense efforts. The base was targeted by Allied air raids in 1945 before being abandoned after the war.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening the site as a functional airport. The land has been fully redeveloped and integrated into the local infrastructure as a public road, industrial park, and agricultural area. Re-establishing an airport would be logistically complex and economically unfeasible, especially given the proximity of the much larger Matsuyama Airport (RJOM), which serves the prefecture.
