Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 1943

Reason for Closure

Military Replacement. The original civilian airfield was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1941 during the lead-up to the Pacific War. The Navy then constructed a new, larger, and more strategically located military airbase (the site of the current Matsuyama Airport) which was completed in 1943. The opening of this new facility rendered the original airfield obsolete, leading to its permanent closure and abandonment.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and shows no visible remnants of its aviation past. The area, historically known as Yoshida-hama, is now a dense industrial zone occupied by factories (notably the Teijin Matsuyama Factory), warehouses, and port facilities.

Historical Significance

This was the first airport to serve the city of Matsuyama and Ehime Prefecture. Opened in 1937, it was a civilian airfield that pioneered air travel in the region, handling early domestic passenger and mail services. Its operation marked the beginning of Matsuyama's aviation history. During its short operational life, it was a key link for the region before being absorbed into Japan's military infrastructure during World War II. The name 'Matsuyama West Airfield' is a modern, unofficial designation to distinguish it from the current airport.

Reopening Prospects

None. The site is fully occupied by heavy industry and critical urban infrastructure. The region is well-served by the modern Matsuyama Airport (IATA: MYJ, ICAO: RJOM) located a few kilometers to the west, making any prospect of reopening this historical site both physically impossible and unnecessary.
