Ehime Airfield

Military Demobilization. The airfield was a military installation built by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. It was abandoned following Japan's surrender, which ended the war and led to the dissolution of the Imperial Japanese military.

The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the Ehime Prefecture General Sports Park (愛媛県総合運動公園, Ehime-ken Sōgō Undō Kōen). Construction of the park began in the 1970s, and it now houses numerous major sports facilities, including the Ningineer Stadium (home to the Ehime FC football club), an auxiliary athletics stadium, baseball fields, and tennis courts. There are no visible remnants of the original airfield.

The airfield, officially known as Matsuyama East Airfield (松山東飛行場, Matsuyama Higashi Hikōjō), was constructed between 1943 and 1945 as a satellite base for the main Matsuyama Airfield. Its primary purpose was to serve as a dispersal field for fighter interceptor units of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. It is historically associated with the elite 343rd Naval Air Group (Kōkūtai), known for flying the advanced Kawanishi N1K 'Shiden-Kai' fighter. The airfield was intended to help defend the region from Allied bombing raids in the final stages of the war but was not fully completed and saw limited, if any, operational use before the war ended.
